Training on Practical Financial Management for SMEs

Course Overview

Practical Financial Management for SMEs is an intensive one-day physical training program designed to help entrepreneurs, SME owners, managers, and non-finance professionals understand and use essential financial information for better business decision-making.

The program focuses on the practical side of financial management rather than complex accounting theory. Participants will learn how to understand financial statements, manage cash flow and working capital, prepare budgets, control costs, assess profitability, use financial ratios, and make more informed financial decisions.

Program Schedule

Duration: 1 Day
Timing: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Mode: Physical / Classroom Training
Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Target Audience: SME owners, entrepreneurs, managers and non-finance professionals

Session 1 – Understanding Business Finance & Financial Statements

Participants will develop an understanding of the role of financial management in running a successful business, including the difference between accounting and financial management.

The session will cover the three principal financial statements:

Income Statement / Profit & Loss Account – understanding revenue, cost of sales, gross profit, operating expenses and net profit.

Balance Sheet – understanding assets, liabilities and owner's equity and what they reveal about the financial position of a business.

Cash Flow Statement – understanding how cash moves through a business and why a profitable business can still experience cash shortages.

Participants will learn how these statements are interconnected and how managers can use them for decision-making.

Session 2 – Costing, Pricing & Profitability

This session will focus on understanding the actual cost of products and services and its impact on business profitability.

Topics will include fixed and variable costs, direct and indirect costs, contribution margin, gross profit margin, markup versus margin, break-even analysis and basic pricing considerations.

Practical examples will demonstrate how changes in selling price, sales volume and costs affect business profitability.

Session 3 – Cash Flow & Working Capital Management

Effective cash-flow management is critical for SMEs. This session will explain how businesses can remain profitable on paper while facing serious liquidity problems.

Topics will include cash-flow forecasting, receivables and collection management, inventory management, supplier payments, managing short-term obligations, working-capital requirements and maintaining appropriate cash reserves.

Participants will learn practical approaches for identifying and preventing potential cash-flow shortages.

Session 4 – Budgeting & Financial Planning

Participants will learn how to translate business objectives into a practical financial plan.

The session will cover sales forecasting, expense budgeting, cash budgets, capital expenditure planning, budget assumptions and comparing actual performance against budget.

Participants will also learn how budgets can be used as management tools rather than simply accounting exercises.

Session 5 – Financial Ratios & Business Performance

This session will introduce selected financial ratios that are particularly useful to SME owners and managers.

The program will cover practical measures of:

Profitability – gross profit margin, net profit margin and return measures.

Liquidity – current ratio and ability to meet short-term obligations.

Efficiency – inventory, receivables and asset utilization.

Leverage – understanding debt levels and financial obligations.

The emphasis will be on interpreting the numbers and identifying warning signs, rather than memorizing formulas.

Session 6 – Financing Business Growth

Participants will explore how businesses can assess their financing requirements and evaluate different sources of finance.

Topics will include owner's equity, retained earnings, bank financing, working-capital finance and other potential financing arrangements. The session will also discuss factors lenders commonly consider when assessing a business and the importance of maintaining credible financial information.

Session 7 – Practical Financial Decision-Making

The final session will bring the day's learning together through practical business situations.

Participants will examine questions such as:

Should the business increase its price?
Can it afford additional staff or equipment?
Why are sales increasing while cash is decreasing?
Which products or services are actually profitable?
How much working capital does the business require?
Can the business afford additional borrowing?
What financial indicators should management monitor regularly?

The objective is to help participants move from simply recording financial information to actively using it for business decisions.

Who Should Attend?

The program is suitable for SME owners, entrepreneurs, startup founders, business managers, departmental managers, professionals, family-business owners and individuals responsible for business decisions who do not necessarily have a formal accounting or finance background.

It can also benefit junior finance and accounts personnel who want to better understand the management perspective of business finance.

Training Methodology

The course will use interactive presentations, practical business examples, financial exercises, case discussions and question-and-answer sessions.

The emphasis will be on explaining financial concepts in straightforward business language and showing participants how they can apply them to their own organizations.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the program, participants should be able to understand the basic structure and purpose of financial statements; distinguish between profit and cash flow; understand business costs and profitability; calculate basic break-even requirements; manage cash flow and working capital more effectively; prepare and use budgets; interpret important financial ratios; assess basic financing requirements; and use financial information to support business decisions.

Expected Practical Outcome

Participants should leave the training with a clearer understanding of the financial health of a business and the key numbers that management should monitor regularly. They should also be better equipped to discuss financial matters with accountants, banks and other financial stakeholders.
